Understanding Tyre Labels: Fuel Efficiency, Wet Grip and Noise Explained

When you buy a new appliance like a fridge or washing machine, you expect to see an energy efficiency label. The same applies to new tyres. The EU tyre label provides essential information on three key performance areas, making it easier for you to make an informed decision.
Fuel Efficiency
The fuel efficiency rating shows how much the tyre contributes to fuel consumption through its rolling resistance. It is graded from A to E. Tyres with a lower rolling resistance require less energy to turn, saving fuel and reducing emissions. Choosing an A rated tyre over an E rated one could save you a significant amount of money at the petrol pump over the lifespan of the tyre.
Wet Grip
The wet grip rating indicates how well the tyre can brake on wet roads. It is also graded from A to E. This is a critical safety feature. An A rated tyre will stop much faster than an E rated tyre in the rain. Given the frequent wet weather we experience in the UK, we highly recommend prioritising a strong wet grip rating when choosing your new tyres.
External Noise
The noise rating measures the external rolling noise of the tyre in decibels. It is represented by a sound wave symbol alongside the decibel value. Tyres are classified into three classes, from A for the quietest to C for the loudest. While this rating refers to external noise, a quieter tyre on the label often translates to a more comfortable and quieter ride inside the cabin.
Snow and Ice Symbols
In addition to the main three categories, modern tyre labels may also include symbols to indicate if the tyre is suitable for severe snow conditions or ice. Look for the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol if you need a tyre that performs well in winter conditions.
