How to Spot Tyre and Wheel Damage from Potholes on Somerset Roads

Somerset roads are notorious for their potholes, especially after a period of heavy rain. Hitting one of these craters can cause significant damage to your vehicle, even if everything feels fine initially. Knowing what to look for is essential for your safety and can prevent more expensive repairs down the line.
Check for Bulges in the Sidewall
One of the most common signs of pothole damage is a visible bulge on the side of your tyre. This happens when the internal structure of the tyre is compromised by the impact. A bulge means the tyre is structurally unsafe and could blow out at any moment. Do not continue to drive on a tyre with a sidewall bulge.
Look for Cuts and Tears
The sharp edges of a pothole can easily slice into the rubber. Inspect the sidewall and tread closely for any deep cuts. If you can see the cords or fabric underneath the rubber, the tyre needs to be replaced immediately.
Check Your Wheel Rims
It is not just the rubber that takes the hit. Alloy wheels can crack, bend or buckle from a severe impact. Run your hand around the rim and look closely for any flat spots or visible cracks. A bent rim will not hold air properly and can cause a slow puncture or a sudden blowout.
Listen and Feel While Driving
If you have hit a pothole, pay close attention to how the car feels on the road. If the steering wheel is pulling to one side, or if you feel a new vibration, the alignment may have been knocked out of place. Continuing to drive with poor alignment will cause your tyres to wear unevenly and rapidly.
